Medical Conditions

What medical conditions qualify you for Social Security Disability benefits?

Many physical and mental impairments, injuries, and diseases qualify one to receive federal benefits under the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs. The Social Security Administration lists these medical conditions in their manual and on their website. They are as follows:

  • Musculoskeletal system, which includes such conditions as spine disorders, back injuries, and joint problems
  • Special senses and speech, including blindness, visual losses and problems, as well as hearing loss
  • Respiratory system, such as lung problems, diseases such as asthma, emphysema, or cystic fibrosis
  • Cardiovascular system, which includes heart disease or dysfunction and impairments of the arteries or veins
  • Digestive system, which includes gastrointestinal disorders, bowel, and liver problems
  • Genitourinary impairments, which involve diseases or disorders of the kidneys and osteoporosis (bone loss)
  • Hematological disorders, which include blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, chronic anemia, or hemophilia
  • Skin disorders, such as chronic skin infections, lesions, burns, or dermatitis
  • Endocrine disorders, including diabetes and disorders of the thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary and parathyroid glands
  • Impairments that affect multiple body systems, such as Down's syndrome and other impairments that adversely affect normal body function or create developmental problems
  • Neurological disorders, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and brain tumors
  • Mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, mental retardation, autism, and personality disorders
  • Malignant neoplastic diseases, which include lymphoma, leukemia, HIV, and soft tissue tumors of the head and neck
  • Immune system disorders, such as lupus, inflammatory arthritis, and immune deficiency disorders

Proving Your Medical Condition

The key to success in obtaining federal benefits through the Social Security Administration is providing convincing evidence of your medical condition. This is done by providing thorough evidence of doctor's examinations and reports, hospital or clinic visits, surgeries, laboratory tests and results, medications taken, and other treatment programs prescribed and followed. Other important evidence may be needed from vocational experts as to how your medical condition affects your ability to work.

All of the evidence can be obtained and coordinated with my help as a Rochester Social Security disability lawyer. I have worked with thousands of clients, doctors, other healthcare providers, and vocational professionals in this endeavor over two decades of consistent practice in the field of disability law. If you are located in the Monroe County area of New York, I encourage you to get in touch with me so that I can evaluate your case and help you obtain the federal benefits you need.
